A LEADERSHIP ROLE

The former British F1 driver Jackie Stewart has said that the former world champion Jenson Button should take a leadership role within the McLaren team from the next season onwards. After the departure of Lewis Hamilton to Mercedes, Button is the experienced driver within the team. McLaren decided to replace Lewis Hamilton with the largely inexperienced Sergio Perez, who is expected to struggle initially to cope with the demands of challenging for the title on a regular basis. After years of underachieving, Button recently managed to win the title a few years ago. He had to compete for a spot against Hamilton in the McLaren team.

BUTTON BACKS ALONSO

The McLaren driver Jenson Button has said that the Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso is a more worthy winner of the F1 world championship title this season. Fernando Alonso is currently competing with the Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel for the F1 world championship title. The Ferrari driver trails the Red Bull by 13 points in the title race with only one race remaining in the season. Ahead of the final race of the season, Jenson Button has said that Alonso is more worthy of the title because he has been consistent throughout the season.

Alonso had the lead in the world championship title for most of the season until he was eventually overtaken by Sebastian Vettel in the last few weeks. However, he has been able to reduce the gap once again, but it might be too little too late. There is a feeling amongst the F1 media pundits that Sebastian Vettel has enough gap between himself and Fernando Alonso to be able to comfortably win the title for the third time in his career. Vettel only needs to finish above the fourth position in order to guarantee him the F1 world championship title if Fernando Alonso wins the race.

“Probably Fernando, because he’s been there from the word go and he hasn’t really made any mistakes this year and he’s been consistently quick. He’s done a very good job in the car he has. Seb’s been more inconsistent this year. The last few races he’s been fantastic with a great car. They’ve done a good job, and he’s done a great job,” said Button ahead of the Brazilian Grand Prix. There are a number of mathematical permutations that needs to be achieved in order for Alonso to win the first title since moving to Ferrari a few seasons ago.

GAP NOT THAT BIG

The McLaren driver Jenson Button has said that he does not feel that Red bull do not have as big an advantage compared to the likes of Ferrari and McLaren as the recent results might suggest. Red bull have managed to make it three consecutive victories on the bounce, which has allowed them to take the lead in the drivers championship through Sebastian Vettel. After trailing the Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso by 37 points only a few weeks ago, Sebastian Vettel is now six points ahead of the Spaniard and is now the favourite to lift the drivers title for the third time in his career.

Speaking ahead of the Indian Grand Prix, though, the McLaren driver Jenson Button suggested that Red bull do not have a great amount of pace when compared with the likes of McLaren. However, they have been lucky in terms of their reliability issues not coming in at the crucial stages of the season. McLaren have suffered a number of reliability problems in the last few races, which have all but ended the hopes of Lewis Hamilton winning the drivers title in his final season with McLaren. Jenson Button also does not stand any chance of winning the title.

“Perhaps they under performed before [Singapore] – and in Hungary they did. Sebastian was the quickest guy on the circuit but he was stuck behind me. So, I think they have under performed. Sebastian qualified 11th in Spa and finished second, and had the same race pace as us. At Monza they were not quick, but at most races they were quick and it hasn’t worked out – and in the last few races it has been the same for us,” said the McLaren driver. Red bull once again dominated the first two practice sessions ahead of the Indian Grand Prix.

VETTEL BACKED BY BUTTON

The McLaren driver Jenson Button has said that it will now be very tough for Fernando Alonso to the table to hold off the challenge from Sebastian Vettel for the F1 world championship title. The Ferrari driver and the Red bull driver of the two favourites to win the F1 world title this season, despite the fact that the Lotus driver Raikkonen still has an outside chance of winning the title. Fernando Alonso’s lead at the top of the table has been cut from 37 points to just four points in the last few races. Sebastian Vettel recently won the Japanese Grand Prix to once again increase the pressure on the Ferrari driver.

Fernando Alonso retired from the Japanese Grand Prix after problems with the car, which cropped up once again. As a result of this retirement, the F1 world championship title has now swung in favour of the German according to the McLaren driver Jenson Button. The former Brawn GP driver managed to win the F1 world championship title a few years ago, but he is now currently in the sixth position with 131 points on the board. He has said that his main aim is to finish the season in a decent manner.

“It’s going to be very tough to hold on to Sebastian. It’s gone his lead. It’s also tough for him because Red Bull are so fast. Ferrari are pretty quick but not as quick as Red Bull,” McLaren’s Button said after the Japanese Grand Prix. “It was a shame. It is always sad when you cannot do the first corner but we need to concentrate and think about [the Korean Grand Prix] next week. We need to keep working well and not making mistakes. Nothing we can do,” said a very disappointed Fernando Alonso after the race.
